Buffalo Trace ADD working to bridge the digital divide

Residents of Lewis and Robertson counties could soon see improved internet access thanks to a new broadband initiative led by the Buffalo Trace Area Development District (BTADD). As part of the Appalachia Digital Accelerator, BTADD has developed strategic connectivity plans aimed at closing the digital divide in these rural communities.

With input from local leaders and residents, the plans outline steps to expand broadband infrastructure, improve affordability, and ensure that unserved and underserved areas gain access to reliable high-speed internet. Officials say the initiative will boost opportunities for education, telehealth, and economic development—key needs in the region.

“These plans are the result of community collaboration and highlight the areas of needed connectivity throughout the planning areas,” BTADD Executive Director Kevin Cornette said. “Broadband connectivity is essential for the success of everyone in each of our communities. These plans provide paths forward to make connectivity possible for our region.”

The collaboration with the Appalachia Digital Accelerator has empowered BTADD to dedicate resources and staff time to these essential connectivity efforts, ensuring that both counties are well-positioned to pursue federal, state, and local funding opportunities.

With broadband infrastructure being one of the main focuses, both counties aim to improve access for residents, businesses, and educational institutions. The Lewis County Connectivity Plan, for example, includes strategic initiatives to partner with ISPs and extend broadband to underserved areas. Similarly, Robertson County’s plan emphasizes digital adoption and infrastructure expansion, addressing the needs of its more rural population.

“It’s important for all residents to have access to high-speed internet options, regardless of where they live,” Roberts County Judge/Executive Valerie Grigson Miley said. “The Robertson County Connectivity Plan will assist us in achieving this goal.”

As BTADD works with local leaders and residents to implement these plans, the goal is clear: to create a sustainable and inclusive digital ecosystem that supports both current and future generations.
