After more than three decades of dedicated service to the Green River region, Green River Area Development District (GRADD) Executive Director Joanna Shake will retire at the end of this month. Her departure marks the close of an extraordinary career rooted in public service, collaboration, and a deep commitment to improving communities across western Kentucky.

Joanna’s journey with GRADD began in 1994 as an intern, a starting point that would grow into a lifelong calling. Over the years, she advanced through the organization, ultimately being named Executive Director in 2020. In that role, she led GRADD through a period of continued growth while maintaining the organization’s strong regional partnerships and mission-driven focus.

Throughout her career, Joanna played a key role in shaping projects that strengthened the region’s infrastructure, expanded broadband access, supported Brownfield redevelopment, and promoted environmental sustainability. As Associate Director for Economic Development prior to becoming Executive Director, she oversaw grant administration, strategic planning, and multi-agency collaboration across GRADD’s seven-county service area.

Reflecting on her time with the organization, Joanna expressed gratitude for the people and partnerships that defined her career. “My career has been immensely fulfilling, with numerous challenges and successes that have helped me grow personally and professionally,” she shared. “I am especially appreciative of the regional spirit and collaboration that have been a hallmark of my time with GRADD.”

GRADD Board Chairman and Hancock County Judge/Executive Johnny “Chic” Roberts praised Joanna’s lasting influence, noting that her impact extends far beyond the office walls. He shared that wherever he goes in the region, GRADD is often mentioned alongside Joanna’s name.  That being a testament to the trust and respect she has built throughout the community.

Joanna succeeded longtime Executive Director Jiten Shah, who served the organization for 43 years.

“For three decades, GRADD has been privileged to benefit from Jo’s exemplary service,” Shah said. “Her unwavering dedication, tireless work ethic and deep commitment to the Green River Region have been instrumental in shaping the organization’s success. As she enters a well-earned retirement, we reflect with gratitude on a remarkable career and a legacy that will continue to positively impact the region for many years to come.”

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Joanna has remained deeply engaged in civic life, serving on numerous local and regional boards, including the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce, Impact 100, the Owensboro Riverport Authority, and the United Way of the Ohio Valley. She has also been appointed to the Kentucky Housing Corporation and is a graduate of the Delta Leadership Institute.

“The experiences I’ve gained are invaluable and have shaped my career in countless ways,” says Shake. “I am grateful for the trust placed in me and the freedom I had to innovate and push boundaries. It has been an honor to work alongside such a talented and dedicated squad, contributing to the district’s growth and success. I am incredibly proud of the work we have accomplished and the progress we have made.”
