Local officials and state leaders cut the ribbon on the new Rowan County Senior Center, operated by the Gateway Area Development District (GADD), on Wednesday, April 22.

The site, owned by the Rowan County Fiscal Court and leased to GADD for the operation of the senior center program, is supported through a partnership of federal, state, and local funding. Construction of the new 6,500-square-foot facility was made possible by a mixture of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding awarded to the Rowan County Fiscal Court.

The public event unveiled the new, modern facility while highlighting the many programs and services available to older adults in Rowan County. Distinguished guest speakers included Senior Advisor to the Governor Rocky Adkins, Department for Local Government Commissioner Matt Sawyers, and Department for Aging and Independent Living Commissioner Victoria Elridge.

“This center represents a long-overdue investment in the individuals who have given so much to our community, and it has been our fiscal court’s privilege to help bring this vision to life as responsible stewards of public resources,” said Rowan County Judge/Executive Harry Clark. “This project is a true reflection of what can be accomplished through strong partnerships and a shared commitment to serving others. We are deeply grateful to the Governor’s Office, the Department for Local Government, the Gateway Area Development District, and the many individuals whose collaboration made this possible. This $2 million, 6,500-square-foot facility is thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of our seniors, offering modern amenities, engaging activities, and the space to grow and thrive for years to come.”

GADD Executive Director Joshua Farrow shared, “Over time, it became clear that we had outgrown our previous location, and the need for a larger space was evident. This new facility allows us to better meet the evolving needs of our senior population and continue delivering the high-quality programs and services they deserve. I am grateful to our dedicated staff, whose hard work, patience, and perseverance have carried us to this moment, as well as to our federal, state, and local partners whose continued support made this vision a reality.”

GADD extends its sincere appreciation to the generous donors whose contributions helped equip the new facility with furnishings and gaming and exercise equipment.

The Rowan County Senior Center officially transitioned to its new location on May 4. The center is open 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday-Friday, with lunch served daily from 11:30 a.m.-noon.
