NKADD recognizes the professionals who keep Northern Kentucky's roads, water systems and infrastructure running every day

Each year, communities across the country recognize the vital role of public works professionals during National Public Works week, celebrated this year May 17-23. The observance highlights the essential services that keep infrastructure functioning and communities safe, healthy and connected.

The Northern Kentucky Area Development District (NKADD) is proud to support organizations like the Northern Kentucky Branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA), providing administrative and organizational assistance to strengthen collaboration among public works professionals across the region.

Public works departments are responsible for a wide range of critical services that often go unnoticed. From maintaining roads and bridges to ensuring access to clean drinking water, managing stormwater systems and responding to emergencies, these professionals work daily to preserve and enhance quality of life — supporting public safety, economic growth and community resilience.

Tyler Hill, infrastructure project manager and Kentucky chapter president of APWA, said the week offers an important opportunity for public recognition.

“Public Works Week is a chance to pull back the curtain on the essential work that keeps our communities running every single day,” Hill said. “It’s about recognizing the men and women who maintain our roads, deliver safe drinking water, manage stormwater, and stand ready during emergencies. For our communities, it’s a reminder that quality of life, public safety and economic stability all depend on strong infrastructure and the people behind it.”

As the week approaches, residents and local governments are encouraged to thank the professionals who work behind the scenes — from the roads we drive to the water we drink to the systems that protect us during severe weather.
