KRADD Senior Games draw regional athletes to Knott County

The Kentucky River Area Development District (KRADD) welcomed senior athletes, volunteers and community partners May 21 to the Knott County Sportsplex for the annual KRADD Senior Games, a celebration of healthy aging, active living and community engagement held in recognition of Older Americans Month. 

Older adults from throughout the Kentucky River region competed in Olympic-style events including shuffleboard, fishing line casting, ring toss, darts and basketball. Cheer and dance competitions were among the day’s highlights, showcasing participants’ enthusiasm and creativity. Although rainy weather forced the cancellation of the softball throw event, spirits remained high as competitors enjoyed a full day of activities, fellowship and camaraderie. 

Beyond the athletic competition, the Senior Games doubled as a health and wellness fair, connecting participants with resources and services available throughout the region. Local organizations and businesses provided health screenings, educational materials, demonstrations and giveaways. Attendees had the opportunity to receive A1C screenings, learn about assistive technologies for individuals with visual impairments and explore 3D-printed accessibility devices designed to help older adults maintain independence and improve quality of life.

KRADD staff and volunteers from American Electric Power coordinated events, assisted participants and helped ensure a positive experience throughout the day. The event reflects KRADD’s broader commitment to supporting the health, well-being and continued engagement of older adults across eastern Kentucky.
