Historic Shelbyville property cleared for revitalization

Shelby County Fiscal Court has completed the remediation of lead-based paint from the former Shelby County Jailer's Residence at 500 Washington St. in Shelbyville. The fiscal court was awarded a subgrant of $147,733.05 from the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection's Kentucky Brownfield Program, which previously provided a no-cost environmental assessment and cleanup plans for the site to establish eligibility for remediation funding. The fiscal court, led by County Judge/Executive Dan Ison, also contributed funds to the remediation, which was accomplished by A&M Industrial Services. Staff members of Kentuckiana Regional Planning & Development Agency's (KIPDA) Community and Economic Development division were happy to assist with the grant application and administration to secure the funding.

The former jailer's residence, a two-story brick house built prior to 1876, is a Kentucky Cultural Resource and a contributing property to the National Register of Historic Places, listed as the Shelby County Courthouse and Main Street Commercial District. Now that the remediation of hazardous materials and contaminants is complete, the former jailer's residence is a handsome historic site ready to be safely revitalized and transformed into a community asset. It is anticipated to be remodeled into county government offices to serve Shelby County residents.
