FIVCO staff deliver 2,650 emergency meal kits across five counties

Staff from FIVCO Area Development District packaged and delivered more than 2,650 emergency meal kits to vulnerable residents across Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Greenup and Lawrence counties in May and June as part of a service project addressing food insecurity in the region.

The effort targeted 129 clients who receive in-home meals through Mom’s Meals, a nutrition program serving older adults, individuals with disabilities and other at-risk households. Beginning in February, FIVCO staff contacted each client to assess their ability to safely store emergency meals. Based on individual storage capacity, clients were assigned frozen meals, shelf-stable meals, or a combination of both. 

Staff packaged, labeled and sorted all meal kits by delivery location before beginning distribution May 6. Throughout May and June, staff delivered the emergency meals directly to clients across the service area. For clients receiving frozen meals, staff also conducted in-home visits to provide education on proper storage, the purpose of the emergency supply and guidance on when meals should be used or discarded.

The project highlighted FIVCO’s commitment to addressing food insecurity while strengthening direct connections with some of the region’s most vulnerable residents. Beyond nutritional support, the effort underscored the importance of service, compassion and collaboration in building stronger communities across eastern Kentucky.
