FIVCO ADD showcasing local communities
BY MOLLY HAINES, KCADD Public Information Officer | Feb. 3, 2025
The FIVCO Area Development District knows a thing or two about giving back to its communities.
Founded in 1968, the agency played a key role in the construction of the AA Highway, which connects Ashland in eastern Kentucky to Alexandria in the north, bringing much-needed industries and jobs to the region.
Over the years, FIVCO has remained committed to regional growth by securing funding for local projects, fostering economic development, supporting community initiatives, coordinating regional planning, and advocating for its five-county service area of Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Greenup, and Lawrence.
Now, the agency is furthering its mission by spotlighting what makes each community unique and vibrant. Through a new initiative on its Facebook page, FIVCO is celebrating the cities and towns that define the region. By doing so, it hopes to not only highlight its efforts but, more importantly, showcase the strengths and successes of the communities it serves.
"Our role has always been to support and uplift the communities in our region," FIVCO Executive Director Lance Hanshaw said. "While we take pride in our work, we want our social media presence to reflect the true heart of our region—the people, businesses, and organizations that make it a great place to live and work."
FIVCO’s community spotlights introduce audiences to different towns and cities in the region, sharing what makes each special. Recent features have highlighted communities like Flatwoods, Kentucky, showcasing its family-friendly atmosphere, active events, and rich heritage. These spotlights bring attention to each area's unique character, celebrating the traditions, businesses, and events that residents cherish.
By shifting the focus from the agency itself to the communities it serves, FIVCO hopes to foster a deeper connection with residents and inspire regional pride.
"We believe that by highlighting the positive things happening in our region, we can create a sense of unity and excitement about our collective future," Hanshaw added. "This isn’t just about what FIVCO does—it’s about what we can achieve together."
Follow FIVCO on social media to stay up to date with its community spotlights and learn more about local happenings. Residents are encouraged to engage, share their stories, and celebrate their hometowns.
